Focusing on things you can control

To make it a little easier to cope with PBA episodes, here are a few ideas from doctors and patients, aside from medical treatment:

  • Be open about it. Let people know that you sometimes cry or laugh unexpectedly because PBA episodes are the result of a neurologic condition.
  • Distract yourself. If you feel a crying or laughing episode coming on, try to focus on something unrelated.
  • Change your body position. Note the position you take when you are having a PBA episode. When you think you are about to laugh or cry, change your position. For example, if you’re sitting while an episode begins, try standing.
  • Breathe. Take slow, deep breaths until you are in control.
  • Relax. Release the tension in your forehead, shoulders, and other muscle groups that tense up during a PBA episode. Straighten your shoulders, lift your chest and relax your neck and jaw.
  • Talk to other people. Other people with your condition can help you feel like you’re not alone.

These tips are general coping techniques and are not substitutes for medical advice from your doctor. Please talk to your doctor about more ways to cope with PBA episodes.


Help manage through your PBA episodes

You may find there are things you can do to help manage the effects of your crying or laughing episodes:

  • If you feel an episode coming on, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing may help shorten the PBA episode.
  • Other lifestyle practices such as quiet meditation, yoga, or art and music therapy may help you possibly avoid PBA episodes.

In addition, you may benefit from medication to reduce PBA episodes. NUEDEXTA is the only medication FDA-approved to treat PBA. It’s important to remember:

  • If your doctor has prescribed NUEDEXTA for your PBA, be sure to take it exactly as prescribed to allow NUEDEXTA to work as intended.
